“I always ruin things.”
“I ruin everything I touch.”
When your voice says:
“I ruin everything I touch.”
“Look at all my past mistakes. This proves it again.”
Coach Lynn says:
That is overgeneralization. One event, even a painful one, is not proof of an unchanging pattern.
Then you say:
Here’s what I need to do:
- Take one or more Composure Breaths to settle my body.
- Pinpoint the exact situation triggering my reaction.
- Recall a single counterexample—an instance where I managed a challenge effectively, made amends, or acted with genuine care.
- Select an appropriate, balanced action tailored specifically to this event.
Coach Lynn says:
A single difficult event isn’t your entire story. When you widen your focus to remember what you’ve overcome and restored, you respond to today’s challenge with a balanced perspective and steady composure.
