“I’m such an idiot.”
“How could I be so stupid?”
When your voice says:
“How could I be so stupid?”
“Of course I messed that up. I’m hopeless.”
Coach Lynn says:
Insulting yourself offers no real explanation. It simply inflicts emotional pain instead of helping you understand the situation or determine your next step.
Then you say:
Here’s what I need to do:
- Settle my body by taking one or more Composure Breaths.
- Swap self-criticism for objective facts: “I overlooked that detail,” “I misunderstood,” or “I made an error.”
- Determine what corrective action, if any, is required.
- Take the next constructive step forward.
Coach Lynn says:
Facts show the path forward, whereas insults only serve to punish. By replacing harsh labels with clear reality, you can adjust course quickly while preserving your confidence and composure.
