“I have to answer now.”
“They asked, so I have to answer right now.”
When your voice says:
“They asked, so I have to answer right now.”
“Just say yes and figure it out later.”
Coach Lynn says:
A pause gives you room to make a deliberate choice instead of an anxiety-driven promise.
Then you say:
Here’s what I need to do:
- Take one or more Composure Breaths to settle my body.
- Buy time with a pause phrase and a timeframe: "Let me check my schedule and get back to you by tomorrow."
- Before replying, look at my calendar and energy, and ask: "If I say yes, what will I have to give up?"
- Reply when I said I would, with a clear yes, a partial yes, or a no.
Coach Lynn says:
A pause isn't a no. It's room to choose well. When you take time before replying, you trade rushed promises for clear commitments you can actually keep.
