“I can’t disappoint them.”

“I can’t let them down.”

When your voice says:

“I can’t let them down.”

“I’ll say yes, even if I can’t keep it up.”

Coach Lynn says:

A promise you cannot keep often creates more disappointment later. A smaller, honest commitment may be kinder than an automatic yes.

Then you say:

Here’s what I need to do:

  • Take one or more Composure Breaths to settle my body.
  • Before answering, ask: "What can I actually give without running myself down?" Be specific about time and energy.
  • Choose the honest option: a smaller piece ("I can do the first part"), a later time ("I can do it next week"), or a clear no ("I can't take this on").
  • Say it plainly, without adding extra promises to soften it. A little disappointment now is better than a broken promise later.

Coach Lynn says:

An honest no beats an exhausted yes. When you promise only what you can deliver, people learn they can count on your word, and you keep the energy to show up well.
