“My mistake is now my identity.”
“One mistake and now I’m careless, a failure, not good enough.”
When your voice says:
“One mistake and now I’m careless, a failure, not good enough.”
“This isn’t something I did. It’s who I am.”
Coach Lynn says:
An error is simply a single piece of information. Internal criticism inflates it into a global label, making a far grander assertion than the facts ever warrant.
Then you say:
Here’s what I need to do:
- Take one or more Composure Breaths to settle my body.
- State what happened in one plain sentence, with no label and no judgment: “This is what happened …”
- Separate the event from myself: “I made a mistake” is not “I am a mistake.”
- Remind myself: “I am a learner, not just a performer.”
Coach Lynn says:
An error is something you did, not who you are. When you view yourself as a learner rather than purely a performer, every slip up turns into insight that fuels your growth.
