“If I don’t understand it immediately, I’m not smart enough”

“If I don’t get it right away, I’m not cut out for this.”

When your voice says:

“If I don’t get it right away, I’m not cut out for this.”

“Struggling to learn means I can’t do it.”

Coach Lynn says:

Not understanding something immediately is just information about the task. It has nothing to do with you. It is not a verdict about your intelligence.

Then you say:

Here’s what I need to do:

  • Take one or more Composure Breaths to settle my body.
  • Replace “I should know this” with “[SAY MY NAME], you are learning this.”
  • Ask one specific question, study one example, or try one practice round.
  • Notice what becomes clearer after effort.

Coach Lynn says:

Learning lives in the space between not knowing and knowing. When you stay curious instead of judging yourself, each question builds skill and every effort brings more clarity.
