“Why did I say that?”
“I can’t believe I said that.”
When your voice says:
“I can’t believe I said that.”
“I need to go over that conversation one more time.”
Coach Lynn says:
Post-event replay can feel like learning, but it often keeps you stuck in a moment you cannot change.
Then you say:
Here’s what I need to do:
- Take one or more Composure Breaths to settle my body.
- Finish this sentence once: "Next time, I'll ___." If nothing fits, there's no lesson to take.
- Ask: "Did my words actually cause a problem?" If yes, send one short follow-up: "I've been thinking about what I said. Here's what I meant." If not, let it be.
- Shift my attention to something I can do right now such as a task, a walk, or the conversation in front of me.
Coach Lynn says:
Keep the lesson. Let go of the replay. When you take what’s useful and return to the present, embarrassment fades and you walk into the next conversation with confidence.
